Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) Longitudinal Survey

Key findings from the "Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) Longitudinal Survey" were published by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) on 6 November 2007. This report presents analysis of data from the first ever HESA follow-up (Longitudinal) survey of leavers from higher education institutions. These graduates were previously surveyed approximately six months after gaining their qualification (Early DLHE).

The analysis provides an insight into the employment patterns of graduates three and a half years into their careers and is based on responses from 24,825 graduates from the 2002/03 graduating cohort. These 24,825 were the respondents from a sample of around 62,000 (20 per cent of those who responded to the earlier survey) selected to provide a representative set of information.

Key results for the UK as a whole:

  • 74 per cent of graduates were in full-time paid employment  (57 per cent at Early DLHE);
  • 6 per cent of graduates were in part-time paid employment (7 per cent at Early DLHE);
  • 5 per cent were in further study (14 per cent at Early DLHE);
  • 9 per cent were in a combination of work and further study (11 per cent at Early DLHE);
  • 2 per cent were unemployed (5 per cent at Early DLHE);
  • Of those in employment, 80 per cent were employed in 'graduate' occupations compared with 71 per cent at Early DLHE;

The Longitudinal Survey also included a set of questions relating to graduates' satisfaction with their study choices and career to date.

  • 85 per cent of graduates were either 'very satisfied' or 'fairly satisfied' with their careers to date;
  • the majority of respondents, should they choose their courses again, indicated they would not change the subject, HE institution nor the qualification level.
