This Statistical First Release summarises provisional data on learner numbers in post-16 education and training for the academic year 2006/07.  The release contains information on Further Education, Work-based Learning and Community Learning collected via the Welsh Assembly Government's Lifelong Learning Wales Record (LLWR).  Summary information is also provided on post-16 school provision collected through the Welsh Assembly Government's Pupil Level Annual School Census (PLASC).

Data were extracted from LLWR on 25 October 2007 and are subject to revision.  Final data for 2006/07 will be published in April 2008.

Summary

  • There were 299,185 learners in-learning with FE Institutions, Community Learning or Work-based Learning providers during 2006/07.
  • 58 per cent were female and 42 per cent were male.  Males outnumbered females for all ages below 20.  However the number of females aged 20 or above was 63 per cent higher than the equivalent number of males.
  • 71 per cent of enrolments on learning programmes were part-time, 11 per were full-time and 18 per cent were in work-based learning.
  • 33 per cent of learning activities with a known credit level were in a level 1 qualification, 37 per cent were at level 2 and 18 per cent were at level 3.
  • The most popular subjects for learning activities were Care/Basic Skills, Information Technology, Media and Health.
  • 3.4 per cent of learning activities were undertaken either entirely through Welsh (0.3 per cent) or through bilingual provision (3.1 per cent).
