This publication provides data about post-16 learners (excluding learners at higher education institutions) in Wales at both a national and regional level. It is intended as a source of information to underpin strategic planning and policy making in the post-16 education and training sector.

The analysis covers two academic years, 2004/05 and 2005/06, and data has been sourced from the Lifelong Learning Wales Record (LLWR) and the Post-16 Pupil Level Annual Schools Census (PLASC).

Note that the figures detailed within this publication have been produced on a slightly different methodological basis to the Statistical First Releases SDR36/2006 and SDR53/2007. For example, learners domiciled outside Wales have been omitted and learners enrolled at multiple providers during the course of an academic year have been included once at each provider with whom they were enrolled.

Summary

  • There were 354,060 learners domiciled in Wales and pursuing learning at a further education (FE) institution, other training (OT) provider, community learning (CL) provider or school sixth form during 2005/06.
  • Compared to the equivalent figures for 2004/05, this represented a percentage increase in learners which varied by region from 9% in both South West and Mid Wales to 5% in North Wales and 2% in South East Wales.
  • 58% of learners were female and 42% were male.
  • 42% of learners were aged under 25 as at 31 August 2005 and 38% of learners were aged between 25 and 49 as at the same date.
