This release provides information relating to post-16 learners enrolled during the 2005/06 academic year and has been sourced from the Lifelong Learning Wales Record (LLWR), January 2006 Post-16 Pupil Level Annual Schools Census (PLASC) and Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) Student Record.
  • There were significant geographic variations in post-16 participation in 2005/06.
  • The unitary authorities with the highest post-16 learner standard participation rates were Neath Port Talbot, Pembrokeshire and Denbighshire.
  • The unitary authorities with the lowest post-16 learner standard participation rates were Ceredigion, Monmouthshire and Powys.
  • There were clear geographic differences in areas of high and low participation between the male and female cohorts. Overall, the participation rate was higher ithe female post-16 learner cohort.
  • The overall participation rate was higher in the under 20 learner cohort. This can be attributed to the prevalence of learners aged 19 and under in the sixth form sector. However, there were pockets of relatively high participation in the over 19 learner cohort such as Conwy, Denbighshire and Pembrokeshire.
