The latest National Statistics on Council Tax Dwellings in Wales produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 12 January 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

This release provides details on the number of dwellings liable for council tax in Welsh local authorities for the period 2010-11.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The total number of dwellings liable for council tax in Wales for 2010-11 is 1,320,647, a rise of 0.6% over the previous year.  This total is equivalent to 1,178,237 band D dwellings.  Gwynedd is showing the highest increase at 1.5%, followed by Monmouthshire at 1.3%.
  • Rhondda Cynon Taf has the highest number of band A properties (44,152).  Blaenau Gwent has the highest proportion of dwellings in bands A and B (84%), Monmouthshire has the lowest (9%).
  • Around a third of dwellings in Wales receive a 25% discount, generally due to being occupied by only one liable person.
  • There are 49,255 dwellings in Wales that are exempt from council tax, this represents 4% of all dwellings. The largest exempt category being empty and unfurnished at 16,105, followed by student dwellings at 11,662, with 4,906 dwellings being exempt as a result of being vacant on death.
