Local Authority Budgeted Revenue Expenditure, 2010-11
The latest National Statistics on Local authority Budgeted Revenue Expenditure produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 10 June 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
Statistics on budgeted revenue expenditure and financing by Welsh authorities include data for police, fire and national park authorities, for 2010-11. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 11 June 2009.
The key points from the latest release are:
- Total budgeted gross revenue expenditure as reported by Welsh local authorities for 2010-11 is £7.5 billion, which represents an increase of 3.3% on the previous year.
- County and county borough councils reported increases of 3.6% in their gross revenue expenditure whilst police authorities reported average increases of 1.5% and fire authorities an increase of 2.2%. National park authorities reported an average increase of 1.9%.
- Education services accounted for 34% of the total budgeted expenditure and social services 19%. These two services account for over half of the overall expenditure.
- Vale of Glamorgan shows the largest county increase in gross revenue expenditure at 6.3%. Ceredigion shows the lowest increase at 0.6%.
- Net revenue expenditure, i.e. excluding specific and special grants, increased by 2.5% in 2010-11.
- Local authorities’ reserves at the beginning of 2010-11 are estimated to be around £856 million.
