Households Below Average Income, 2001/02

This publication includes the main official indicators of income poverty.

In 2001/02 it was estimated that:

  • In Wales 25 per cent of residents were in households with incomes below 60 per cent of median income, compared with 22 per cent in Great Britain as a whole. Along with London, Wales had the highest percentage.
  • 31 per cent of children in Wales lived in households with incomes below 60 per cent of median income, similar to the proportion for Great Britain as a whole (30 per cent).
  • 23 per cent of adults of working age in Wales lived in households with incomes below 60 per cent of median income compared with 19 per cent for Great Britain. The percentage in Wales was higher than any other region.
  • 23 per cent of pensioners in Wales lived in households with below 60 per cent of median income, similar to the average for Great Britain as a whole (22 per cent).
