This release gives estimates of the size structure of all enterprises that are active in Wales in 2003, including estimates for the very smallest businesses that operate below the VAT threshold. Enterprise counts are given by employee size band for different subsets of the business population, together with related employment and turnover aggregates.
  • In 2003, 41.5 per cent of business sector employment in Wales was accounted for by enterprises in the large size band (250 or more employees), compared to 43.4 per cent for the UK as a whole.
  • Enterprises with 0 to 9 employees (micro size band) accounted for 31.3 per cent of Welsh business sector employment, higher than the UK figure of 28.2 per cent.
  • A higher share of Welsh employment in production industries is in the large size band than is the case for the UK (57.3 per cent vs 48.6 per cent), whilst the reverse is true for distribution, hotels, restaurants and transport industries and finance and business services.
  • 94.8 per cent of agriculture employment in Wales is within the micro (0-9 employees) size band. Construction employment in Wales is also highly concentrated in the micro size band (64.1 per cent), more so than for the UK as a whole (57.5 per cent).
  • Ceredigion, Powys and Pembrokeshire each have over 50 per cent of business sector employment in the micro size band, whilst Newport has the lowest concentration of employment in the micro size band (less than one-fifth).
  • Newport and Cardiff have the highest concentrations of business sector employment in the large size band (both over 50 per cent).
