Size Analysis of Welsh Business, 2006

This release gives estimates of the size structure of all enterprises that are active in Wales in 2006, including estimates for the very smallest businesses that operate below the VAT threshold. Enterprise counts are given by employee size band for different subsets of the business population, together with related employment and turnover aggregates.
  • In 2006, 41 per cent of business sector employment in Wales was accounted for by large enterprises (those with 250 or more employees), compared to 43 per cent for the UK as a whole.
  • Enterprises with 0 to 9 employees (micro size band) accounted for 32 per cent of Welsh business sector employment, higher than the UK figure of 30 per cent.
  • 55 per cent of turnover attributed to Wales for enterprises active in Wales was accounted for by those with 250 or more employees, compared to 52 per cent for the UK as a whole.
  • There was considerable variation between industry sectors, with employment in agriculture almost entirely amongst micro businesses (93 per cent) and employment in production industries concentrated in the large size band (55 per cent).
