Regional Total Research and Development, 2010

The latest National Statistics on gross domestic expenditure on research and development (GERD) for the UK, including estimates by English region and UK country, were released at 9:30am on 15 March 2012 by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website Statistics on gross domestic expenditure on research and development include data by government office region for 2010. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 18 March 2011.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • An estimated total of £527 million was spent on R&D in 2010 in Wales.
  • This represented 2.0 per cent of total UK R&D expenditure and 1.2 per cent of total Gross Value Added in Wales.
  • Business enterprise R&D accounted for 46 per cent of the total, with higher education accounting for 50 per cent and government making up the remaining 4 per cent.
  • In a small region such as Wales, the level of R&D expenditure can be influenced greatly by a small number of major projects commencing or ending.  Therefore although the time series is volatile, the figures for 1993 to 2010 show an overall upward trend, with an annual average growth in real terms of 3 per cent.

The detailed dataset on StatsWales will be updated to include these new data by 21 March 2012.
