The latest National Statistics on 2010 Mid-Year Population Estimates produced by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) were released on 30th June 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on 2010 mid-year population estimates include data for Wales, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland for the period up to the end of June 2010. The latest release updates the mid year estimates for 2009 previously released on 24 June 2010.

The key points about Wales’ population from the latest release are:

  • The population of Wales has crossed the 3 million mark for the first time in 2010, as at 30th June 2010 there were 3,006,400 people resident in Wales
  • The increase in population in the 12 months between 1st July 2009 and June 30th 2010 was due to:
    - Natural change (4,600 more births than deaths).
    - Migration (2,500 more people arriving in Wales than leaving).
  • There were more people aged 65 years and over than children (aged 0 to 15) in Wales for the first time in 2010:
    - 18.2 per cent of the population were children aged 0 to 15 (548,000 people), compared to 18.3 per cent in mid-2009.
    - 18.6 per cent were people aged 65 years and over (558,100 people), compared to 18.3 per cent in mid-2009.
  • Around a third of local authorities experienced a population decrease between mid-2009 and mid-2010, with the largest decreases being in Blaenau Gwent and Conwy (both 0.4 per cent).
