The latest National Statistics on teachers produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 16 June 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on teachers in service, vacancies and sickness absence include data for Wales for the period as at January 2011. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 17 June 2010.

The key points from the latest release are:

Teachers in service with local authorities LAs:

  • There were 27,332 full-time equivalent (FTE) teachers employed by LAs, a decrease of 752 since January 2010.

Teacher vacancies:

  • The total number of teacher vacancies in nursery, primary and secondary schools was 90. In nursery schools there were no vacancies, 61 in primary schools and 29 in secondary schools.
    The total vacancy rate was 0.3 per cent, same as in January 2010.

Teacher sickness absence:

  • 64 per cent of teachers in maintained schools took a period of sickness absence during 2010, up from 62 per cent during 2009.
  • The total number of days sickness absence taken decreased by over 7 per cent, to 218,350 days.
