The latest National Statistics on results of the teacher assessments of non-core subjects for Wales 2011 produced by the Welsh Government were released on 16 August 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on attainment in the non-core subjects includes final data for Wales for the 2011 teacher assessments.

The key points from the latest release are:

Key Stage 3

  • Since 2010 there has been an increase in the percentage of pupils achieving the expected level in every subject. The greatest increase was in Welsh Second Language (5.3 percentage points);
  • In 2011, the percentage of pupils achieving the expected level (level 5 or above) varied from 83.1 per cent in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to 64.6 per cent in Welsh Second Language;
  • In each subject, a higher percentage of girls than boys achieved the expected level. The gap between girls and boys was greatest in Welsh Second Language (19.7 percentage points)

Key Stage 2

  • In 2011, the percentage of pupils achieving the expected level (level 4 or above) in Welsh Second Language was 51.4 per cent, compared with 35.4 per cent in 2010; an increase of 16.0 percentage points.

Benchmark information tables are also available for Key Stage 3 (both for core and non-core subjects) and were published alongside this release. The benchmarking tables were revised on 14 December 2011
