Exclusions from Schools, 2010/11

Statistics on exclusions from schools in Wales include data for Wales for the past ten academic years, from 2001/02 to 2010/11, and for England and Scotland for the academic year 2009/10.  The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 2 March 2011.

The key points from the latest release are:

• In 2010/11 there were 158 permanent exclusions, a decrease of 27 from 2009/10;
• The highest rate of permanent exclusions from maintained secondary schools, 1.5 exclusions per thousand pupils, was seen in Powys and Newport;
• Assault or violence towards pupils and staff were the two largest causes for permanent exclusions;
• There were 18,298 fixed-term exclusions in 2010/11, an increase of 20 from 2009/10.
