The latest statistics on exclusions from schools in Wales produced by the Welsh Government were released on 28 February 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website Statistics on exclusions from schools in Wales include data for Wales for the past ten academic years, from 2001/02 to 2010/11, and for England and Scotland for the academic year 2009/10.  The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 2 March 2011.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • In 2010/11 there were 158 permanent exclusions, a decrease of 27 from 2009/10;
  • The highest rate of permanent exclusions from maintained secondary schools, 1.5 exclusions per thousand pupils, was seen in Powys and Newport;
  • Assault or violence towards pupils and staff were the two largest causes for permanent exclusions;
  • There were 18,298 fixed-term exclusions in 2010/11, an increase of 20 from 2009/10.
