Headline Statistics summarising the National Statistics vital statistics published by the Office for National Statistics, were released on 27 July 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Vital statistics include numbers of births and deaths. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 23 September 2010.

Key facts:

  • There were nearly 36,000 live births in 2010, up from 34,900 in 2009.
  • There were 190 still births in 2010, up from 180 in 2009.
  • In 2010 the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) was an average of 1.98 children per woman, up from 1.93 in 2009.
  • In 2010 there were 144 deaths of infants under one year, down from 166 in 2009. The corresponding infant mortality rate in 2010 was 4.0 deaths per thousand live births, lower than 4.8 in the previous year.
  • At around 31,200, the total number of deaths in 2010 was slightly higher than the 2009 figure of 31,000.  The age-standardised death rate in 2010 was 580 deaths per 100,000 population, slightly lower than the 2009 figure of 588 deaths per 100,000 population.
