Co-ordinated Release of Population and Migration Outputs, November 2010

The Office for National Statistics, the Home Office and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) have today simultaneously published a range of demographic data. This forms part of a series of co-ordinated releases of population and migration data, and is part of a ‘coherent reporting’ programme for demographic statistics.

UK Statistics Authority Website International Migration (see notes):

  • The number of people from outside the UK entering Wales for 12 months or more was approximately 14,000 in 2009, compared to 16,000 in 2008 and 15,000 in 2006 and 2007.
  • The number of people leaving Wales for 12 months or more was approximately 13,000 in 2009, lower than the estimate of 16,000 in 2008, but higher than the estimates for 2006 and 2007 – 10,000 and 7,000 respectively.
  • There was a net inflow of around 1,000 international migrants to Wales in 2009, which is the same as the net figure for 2008. This is lower than the net estimates for 2006 and 2007 (net inflow of around 6,000 and 8,000 respectively) and similar to the estimates for the years 2001 to 2005 (where the net inflow was around 1,000 to 2,000).

Internal UK migration:

  • The number of people moving into Wales from the rest of the UK in the twelve months ending March 2010 was around 49,900. The number of people moving from Wales to the rest of the UK was around 48,200. This gives a net inward migration of around 1,600 for the period March 2009 to March 2010.  This is less than the net inward migration figure of 1,900 for the previous 12 months, but is higher than the net inward migration figure of 1,500 for the 12 months ending December 2009.

Information and data published jointly today include:

  • Migration Statistics Quarterly Report, November 2010. This summarises the different quarterly datasets.

Further information and data published today by the ONS include:

  • Internal migration movements between Wales and the rest of the UK for the year ending March 2010.
  • Long Term International Migration between Wales and overseas, 2009.
  • Provisional long term international migration for year ending March 2010 (UK level).
  • Provisional International Passenger Survey estimates of long-term international migration, year ending March 2010 (UK level).
  • Population by country of birth and nationality from the Annual Population Survey, April 2009 to March 2010 (to local authority level).
  • Local area migration indicators.
  • Migration Statistics Improvement Programme: Quarterly Update.

Further information and data published today by the Home Office include:

  • Control of Immigration, quarterly statistical summary, United Kingdom– Q3 2010.

Further information and data published today by the DWP include:

  • National Insurance Number Allocations to Adult Overseas Nationals entering the UK, to June 2010.

Notes
1. Long Term International Migration is the only estimate of long-term civilian migration covering both flows to and from the UK.
2. A long-term international migrant is defined as someone who changes his or her country of usual residence for a period of at least 12 months (UN definition). These figures do not include estimates of short-term migrants (those moving country for less than 12 months).
3. Long Term International Migration estimates are primarily based on the International Passenger Survey.  The sample size for Wales is very small, and therefore the estimates (particularly outward international migration) are very volatile.  We are continuing to work with ONS on improving population and migration statistics.
4. Figures may not sum due to rounding.
5. ONS in partnership with other organisations have a long-term programme of work on improving migration and population statistics, and as a result international migration figures from 2002-2008 were revised in May 2010.
