The latest National Statistics on Household Estimates produced by the Welsh Government were released on 6 October 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on Household Estimates include data for Wales for the period 1991 to 2010.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • As at the 30th June 2010, it was estimated there were around 1,318,500 households in Wales. This represents estimated growth of around 10,600 households or 0.8 per cent since 2009, compared to 0.9 per cent on average for previous years.
  • The majority of the increase in households between 2009 and 2010 was due to an increase of over 7,000 (2 per cent) in the number of one person households.
  • Based on the 2010 mid-year population estimates, the number of people living in private households in Wales is estimated to have grown by around 7,000 between 2009 and 2010, an increase of 0.2 per cent.
  • The average household size in Wales continued to decrease from 2.26 in 2009, to 2.24 persons per household in 2010.
