This bulletin presents Farm Business Survey data on Farm Diversification in Wales in 2006/07. It is concerned with only those farms large enough to employ a farmer at least part time.

Key results

  • 20% of farms had diversified activity in 2006/07. The most common type of diversified enterprise was the letting out of buildings for non-farming use which 14% of farms engaged in. 9% of farms had diversified activity other than the letting of buildings.
  • The average diversified output was £8,100 (averaged over only those farms which had diversified activity). For 92% of farms this represented less than a quarter of total farm output.
  • Diversification was most prevalent on Very Small and Very Large farms.
  • Lowland Grazing Livestock farms were more likely to engage in diversification than other farm types.
