On 26th October 2011 the Welsh Government published Headline Statistics to summarise the National Statistics life expectancy figures published by the Office for National Statistics, according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on life expectancy include data for Wales and the UK for the period up to the end of 2010. This headline updates the bulletin previously released on 24 November 2010 and is based on statistics released by the ONS on 19th October 2011.

The Excel tables below show life expectancy trend data for Wales and 2008-10 life expectancy data for Local Authorities.

The key points are:

In 2008-10:

  • Life expectancy at birth in Wales was 77.6 years for males and 81.8 years for females. This is an increase of 0.5 years over the figure for 2007-09 for men and an increase of 0.3 years for women.
  • Life expectancy at birth in Wales, for both males and females, was lower than England and higher than Scotland and Northern Ireland.
  • In Wales, the overall life expectancy has risen since 1991-93 by 4.4 years for males and 3.0 years for females.
  • Of the local authorities in Wales, Ceredigion had the highest life expectancy at birth for both males and females.
  • Merthyr Tydfil had the lowest life expectancy in Wales for males and Blaenau Gwent the lowest for females.
  • Life expectancy figures at local authority level in Wales differed by 5.4 years for males and 4.2 years for females. This difference between the highest and lowest local authority is smaller than the previous year (2007-09) but higher than the early 90’s.
