Business statistics
The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) is the lead department for business. BIS was created on the 6th June 2009 from the former departments of Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) and the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS). Many of the statistical releases in this theme are still published under these departmental titles.
Other government bodies contributing to this theme include the Department for Media, Culture and Sport (DCMS) and HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC); the Insolvency Service and the Home Office.
Most business statistics are sourced from surveys using the UK Inter Departmental Business Register (IDBR). These include the Annual Business Inquiry and the Monthly Production and Service Sector Inquiries by the Office for National Statistics. The largest single business survey - the Intrastat survey by HM Revenue & Customs - provides data on trade-in-goods between EU Countries.
Business statistics measure company structure, physical size and location; closures and mergers are covered as are key attributes such as International trade, turnover, employment and profits, by industry sectors.
Energy statistics
The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) is the lead body for energy policy.
The Energy statistics that DECC produce include production volumes, individual energy sources such as coal or oil, information on energy prices and on fuel poverty.
