This statement explains the processes followed when statistical outputs are revised or postponed.

Official statistics are produced to robust professional standards of quality and reliability. These standards are defined by the independent UK Statistics Authority in its Code of Practice for Official Statistics.

Official statistics

All our statistical outputs are defined as official statistics by the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007. They are produced according to the principles of the Code of Practice.

National Statistics

Many of our official statistics are also ‘National Statistics’. These have been certified by the UK Statistics Authority as compliant with its Code of Practice.

UK Statistics Authority

The UK Statistics Authority is an independent body operating at arm's length from government as a non-ministerial department, directly accountable to Parliament. It defines the standards that we follow for all our statistics and is responsible for promoting and safeguarding the:

  • production and publication of official statistics that serve the public good
  • quality and comprehensiveness of official statistics, ensuring good practice in relation to official statistics.
