National Statistics on post-16 education and training produced by the Welsh Government were released on 26 September 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website The statistics comprise a reference volume for Further Education, work-based learning and local authority community learning in Wales, primarily covering the period August 2010 to July 2011.

Key points from the volume include:

  • 186,330 learners were enrolled at FE institutions during 2010/11, 0.9 per cent more than in 2009/10.
  • There was a 20 per cent decrease in FE learner numbers in total at Further and Higher Education institutions between December 2004 and December 2010.
  • 90 per cent of learning activities at FEIs were completed and 90 per cent of the completed activities with an assessable outcome were attained.
  • 38,440 learners pursued a Local Authority Community Learning activity in 2010/11 (including those enrolled at FEIs but taught by local authority staff), 2.9 per cent fewer than in the previous year.
  • 57,030 learners were engaged in work-based learning provision at FEIs and other training providers in 2010/11, 1.0 per cent fewer than in 2009/10.
  • 62 per cent of learners leaving their most recent work-based learning programme in 2010/11 went into current or new employment.
