This publication presents a range of statistics on crime in Wales. The report mainly draws on data from the British Crime Survey and police recorded crime, supplied by the Home Office. The publication compares Wales with England; it compares areas within Wales; and it looks at changes in crime over time.

UK Statistics Authority Website Crime in Wales has been consistently lower than in England with the gap narrowing in recent years. The general pattern in Wales is that crime in Dyfed-Powys police force area has been much lower than the Wales average; North Wales lower; South Wales higher; and Gwent much higher.

These are some of the more specific results from the report.

  • Police recorded crime in Wales fell by 20 per cent between 2003 and 2009;there was a similar fall in England.
  • In Wales, police recorded crime for burglary and car crime fell by a third
    between 2003 and 2009; there were similar falls in England.
  • According to the British Crime Survey the rate of personal crime in Wales has fallen by a quarter and household crime by nearly a fifth between 2006 and 2009.
  • Since 2004 the overall police recorded crime rates for Gwent and South Wales have been consistently higher than the Wales average; North Wales has been lower than the Wales average; and Dyfed-Powys much lower.
  • In 2010 the rates of police recorded violent crime in South Wales and Gwent were similar to the averages for Wales, England, and most police force areas in England (apart from London which was high); the North Wales rate was a shade higher than these averages; and Dyfed-Powys much lower.
