Hospital admissions data online, 2011-12

The latest statistics on hospital admissions produced by NHS Wales Informatics Service were released on 23 January 2013.

Statistics on hospital admissions include data for Wales for the period 2011-12. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 7 December 2011.

Hospital Admissions Data Online provides information on hospital activity for Welsh residents and Welsh NHS Local Health Boards (LHBs). The information is derived from the Patient Episode Database for Wales (PEDW). This contains all inpatient and day case activity undertaken in NHS Wales and data on Welsh residents treated in English trusts. The various tables include counts of admissions and episodes, and average lengths of stay. Information is available by type of admission (emergency or elective), patient age, specialty, diagnosis and procedure.

For the first time this year, there are tables on hospital activity for diagnosis and procedure split by each LHB provider in Wales.

For LHBs in Wales:

  • there were around 761,000 hospital admissions in Wales, up from 743,000 in 2010-11
  • 46 per cent of hospital admissions were emergencies, down from 47 per cent in 2010-11
  • the average length of stay for all patients was 7 days (also 7 days if admitted as an emergency)
  • 47 per cent of hospital episodes involved a procedure (33 per cent of inpatient episodes, 88 per cent of day cases)
  • Welsh LHBs admitted around 11,400 residents from outside Wales, down slightly from 11,500 in 2010-11

For Welsh residents:

  • around 52,000 Welsh residents travelled to England for treatment, up from around 50,000 in 2010-11
