Students in Higher Education Institutions, 2010/11

The latest National Statistics on students enrolled at Welsh Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and Welsh domiciled students enrolled at HEIs throughout the UK in the academic year 2010/11 were released on 16 February 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistical Authority website The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 17 February 2011. This bulletin is based on statistics produced by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) and follow on from the statistics previously released by HESA on 12th January 2012.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • There was a small increase in enrolments to Welsh HEIs in 2010/11 whilst HE enrolments amongst Welsh domiciled students at UK HEIs saw no percentage change to 2009/10.
  • There were 131,005 HE student enrolments at Welsh HEIs, 2 per cent higher than 2009/10. 30 per cent of enrolments were part-time.
  • There were 102,625 Welsh domiciled HE student enrolments at UK HEIs, similar to the figure in 2009/10. 41 per cent of enrolments were part-time.
  • There were 20,780 qualifications obtained at Welsh HEIs at first degree level in 2010/11, with 14 per cent of these obtaining a first class honours degree. Welsh domiciled students obtained 14,825 first degree level qualifications with 13 per cent of these obtaining a first class honours degree.
  • Wales is a net importer of full-time students. In 2010/11, there were 19,285 enrolments from Welsh students to UK HEIs outside of Wales, four per cent higher than 2009/10 but still five per cent lower than in 2001/02. There were 30,695 enrolments of students from the UK outside of Wales to Welsh HEIs, six per cent higher than 2009/10 and 15 per cent higher than in 2001/02.
