Welsh Health Survey: Development

The Welsh Health Survey replaced two previous surveys: the former Welsh Health Survey (undertaken in 1995 and 1998) and the Health in Wales Survey (undertaken every two to three years between 1985 and 1996).

2011-13

In 2011-12, work was carried out to test the possibility of introducing data linking to the Welsh Health Survey. This involved developing and testing a new procedure asking respondents for their consent to link their anonymous survey answers to information held about them in other datasets to create a richer information source. Following this work, procedures seeking respondents’ consent to data linking were introduced from 1 April 2013. This forms an optional additional part of the survey, and respondents choosing not to give their consent to data linking are reassured that their survey answers are still useful in their own right.

2011

Following an evaluation of the Welsh Health Survey in 2009, some minor changes were made to the survey questions for 2011. This report describes the cognitive testing of some of these questions.

2009-2010

A user evaluation was conducted in 2009 – this showed that on the whole the survey worked well to meet user needs, but that there was scope for improving the dissemination of results. A dissemination review was conducted in 2010; this was subsequently followed by the production of a dissemination plan.

An experiment was conducted to test the effect of these new elements on response rates, and recommended that the extended child health survey be adopted. This was introduced from January 2007.

The initial focus was mainly on adults, but in 2004 user consultation identified a demand for more detailed data on child health, which could in theory be collected by the inclusion of a longer child questionnaire and measurements of child height and weight.
