Survey of Agriculture and Horticulture, June 2012

Statistics on land use, livestock and labour on agricultural holdings in Wales include data as at 1 June 2012 with comparative data for previous years. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 9 November 2011.

The key points from the latest release are:

• The number of sheep and lambs rose by 3 per cent to 8.9 million in the year since June 2011. This was caused by a 5 per cent increase in the number of lambs; the number of breeding ewes showed a much smaller rise in the last 12 months.
• The total number of cattle and calves fell by 1 per cent from the June 2011 figure. This was largely as result of a drop in the size of the beef herd. The dairy herd remained largely unchanged from June 2011.
