The latest National Statistics on Agriculture produced by the Welsh Government were released on 21 November 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website Statistics on land use, livestock and labour on agricultural holdings in Wales include data as at 1 June 2012 with comparative data for previous years. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 9 November 2011.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The number of sheep and lambs rose by 3 per cent to 8.9 million in the year since June 2011. This was caused by a 5 per cent increase in the number of lambs; the number of breeding ewes showed a much smaller rise in the last 12 months.
  • The total number of cattle and calves fell by 1 per cent from the June 2011 figure. This was largely as result of a drop in the size of the beef herd. The dairy herd remained largely unchanged from June 2011.
