Vital Statistics, 2011

Headline Statistics summarising the National Statistics vital statistics published by the Office for National Statistics, were released on 25 October 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website Vital statistics include numbers of births and deaths. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 27 July 2011.

Key facts:

  • There were nearly 35,600 live births in 2011, down from 36,000 in 2010.
  • There were 167 stillbirths in 2011. This is a fall from 190 in 2010 but as the numbers fluctuate substantially from year to year a single annual change should be interpreted with caution.
  • In 2011 the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) was an average of 1.90 children per woman, down from 1.98 in 2010.
  • In 2011 there were 140 deaths of infants under one year, similar to the 2010 figure of 144. The corresponding infant mortality rate in 2011 was 3.9 deaths per thousand live births and 4.0 in the previous year.
  • At around 30,400, the total number of deaths in 2011 was lower than the 2010 figure of 31,200.  The age-standardised death rate in 2011 was 563 deaths per 100,000 population, lower than the 2010 figure of 580 deaths per 100,000 population.
