Welsh exports up to quarter 4 2012

The latest National Statistics on UK regional exports produced by HM Revenue and Customs for the fourth quarter of 2012 were released on 14 March 2013 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority and updates the statistics previously released on 6 December 2012.

Welsh exports for the whole of 2012 were down 10.2 per cent on 2011 (sum of the UK countries and English regions down 1.7 per cent).  Figures for 2012 quarter 4 in isolation were down on the same quarter of 2011 and down on the previous quarter.

The key results are as follows:

  • the value of exports for Wales for the whole of 2012 fell by £1,373 million compared with 2011
  • there was a decrease in exports to both EU countries and non-EU countries, down £788 million (13.8 per cent) and £586 million (7.5 per cent) respectively
  • eight of the twelve UK countries and English regions saw falls over this period, with Wales having the largest fall (down 10.2 per cent). The remaining regions had increases with the West Midlands having the largest increase (up 6.1 per cent) followed by the East Midlands (3.5 per cent)
  • between 1999 and 2012 there was an 89.0 per cent increase in Welsh exports, the fourth largest behind the North East and the East of England and Yorkshire and the Humber. This compares with an increase of 67.7 per cent for the sum of the UK countries and English regions. Scotland was the only region to see a fall over this period
  • looking at 2012 quarter 4 in isolation, total exports (by value) for Wales fell on the corresponding quarter in 2011 by £944 million (down 28.6 per cent) to £2,354 million. Nine of the twelve UK countries and English regions had falls over this period, with Wales having the largest fall and. The West Midlands had the largest increase (up 7.0 per cent).  Overall, the value of exports for the sum of the UK countries and English regions fell by 4.9 per cent
  • Welsh exports for 2012 quarter 4 were lower in value than in the previous quarter (down £786 million or 25.0 per cent), whilst the sum of the UK countries and English regions rose by 2.6 per cent. Nine of the twelve UK countries and English regions saw an increase over this period (the largest was the West Midlands, up 14.8 per cent). Wales had the largest fall
