Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation 2008

The Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation (WIMD) 2008 is a measure of multiple deprivation at small area level. The third edition of the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation was released in July 2008 and replaced WIMD 2005.

Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation 2008: Summary Report - Revised on 20 December 2011
This report provides a summary analysis for the overall Index and each of the eight domains in the Index including, for each domain, a map showing the variation across Wales and a table of the results for the 10% most deprived Lower Layer Super Output Areas (LSOAs) in Wales.

Revisions

During production of the 2011 edition of WIMD, an error was discovered in the WIMD 2008 income domain. This was because the dependent children of claimants of income-related Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) benefits were erroneously omitted from the indicator in 2008.

The 2008 income indicators were corrected and re-published on StatsWales in November 2011. Indicator values were on average over 20 per cent higher than the originally published value. Changes to the income domain and overall index ranks were made both to StatsWales and to the WIMD 2008 Summary Report on 20 December 2011. A report providing an analysis of the revisions to both the overall Index and Income domain ranks was published on 28 June 2012.

An error was also noted on three of the 2008 education indicators (primary absence rates, secondary absence rates and percentage of adults aged 25-64 with no qualifications). This does not affect the education domain, overall index or LSOA indicator values, as the error occurred in the aggregation process that calculates indicators at various aggregation levels e.g. local authority, MSOA.  In summary, all three indicator rates have decreased as a result of correcting the error. The extent to which the indicator rates have decreased varies with aggregation level; the higher aggregation levels (such as local authority and urban/rural classification) have been affected the most. In contrast, revisions to the Communities First partnerships were relatively small. Out of the three incorrect indicators, the change to the "no qualifications" indicator is the largest.

The 2008 education indicators were corrected and re-published on StatsWales in November 2011.

In March 2011, an error was discovered in the community safety domain of WIMD 2008. As a result, the lower-layer super output area (LSOA) scores and ranks in the community safety domain were revised on 29 March 2011. The change in LSOA ranking in the community safety domain caused small changes to the overall WIMD scores and ranks, and these were revised on the same date.

In July, 2010, an error was discovered in the physical environment domain of WIMD 2008. As a result, the lower-layer super output area (LSOA) scores and ranks in the physical environment domain were revised on 13 July 2010. The change in LSOA ranking in the physical environment domain caused small changes to the overall WIMD scores and ranks, and these were revised on the same date.

Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation 2008: Technical Report
This technical report, published on 19 March 2009, describes how the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation (WIMD) 2008 was constructed. The deprivation domains which were used are listed, together with the indicators within each domain, and the geographical units used are specified. The report also explains the statistical algorithms used to construct the index from these components.

Interactive maps

The link to the interactive maps for WIMD 2008 has been removed following the discovery of an error in the physical environment domain of WIMD 2008, which has also affected the overall WIMD rankings. Maps and further analysis will form part of our new comprehensive analysis web pages, which are currently under development.
