The latest statistics on Delayed Transfers of Care produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 27 August 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on Delayed Transfers of Care include data for Wales on the census date 16 July 2008. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 29 July 2008.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The total number of patients experiencing a delayed transfer of care on the census date of 16 July 2008 was 552; this is a decrease of 45, or 8 per cent, on the figure for 18 June 2008.
  • The total number of patients waiting to leave the NHS was 361.  Of these, 91 were delayed in mental health facilities and 270 were in other acute and community hospitals. A further 124 patients were experiencing a delayed transfer within the NHS or waiting for an assessment and for 67, the next stage could not be determined.
  • The median length of delay for patients waiting to leave the NHS was 39 days.
