The latest National Statistics on NHS Staff Vacancies produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 28 August 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on NHS Staff Vacancies include data for Wales as at  31 March 2008. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 20 March 2008.

At 31 March 2008:

  • 416 NHS posts had been vacant for three months or more. This represents a 31 per cent decrease on the 602 vacancies reported six months earlier.
  • These vacancies account for 0.7 per cent of all NHS posts compared to 0.9 per cent six months earlier and 0.7 per cent a year ago.

The vacancies in different staff groups were as follows:

  • 37 (1.7 per cent of posts) consultant posts - a decrease from 57 (2.8 per cent of posts) six months earlier.
  • 102 (0.5 per cent of posts) qualified nursing, midwifery and health visiting staff - a decrease from 165 (0.8 per cent of posts) six months earlier.
  • 33 (0.8 per cent of posts) qualified allied health professional staff - a decrease from 43 (1.0 per cent of posts) six months earlier.
  • 23 (1.0 per cent of posts) qualified scientific and technical staff - a decrease from 27 (1.3 per cent of posts) six months earlier.
  • 14 (0.7 per cent of posts) qualified healthcare scientists - a decrease from 13 (1.25 per cent of posts) six months earlier.
