This bulletin presents a summary of statistics on General Dental Practitioners (GDPs), who treat at least some NHS patients, in Wales (in this Bulletin these are termed 'NHS dentists'). It highlights some of the trends over the last decade. The brief does not include information on dentists working in the hospital or community dental service.

At 30 September 2005:

  • There were 928 principal dentists in the GDS in Wales, 1 more than the previous September.
  • There were 1,031 GDS dentists of all types in Wales, 7 more than the previous September. In addition there were 39 Personal Dental Service (PDS) dentists.
  • The age distribution of NHS dentists has changed since 1995 with more aged over 40-49 per cent to 56 per cent.
  • Monmouthshire Local Health Board has the highest number of dentists per population and Ceredigion the lowest.
