The data exclude General Medical and Dental Practitioners as they are independent NHS contractors - separate Statistical Bulletins are issued for these staff. More detailed data, including trust level information will be published as soon as possible in statistical reports.

All data relates to whole-time equivalent numbers (excluding locums) unless otherwise stated.

Between 2004 and 2005 (in terms of whole-time equivalent numbers):

  • Directly employed NHS staff increased by 2,270 (3 per cent) to 68,270.
  • Hospital medical & dental staff increased by 161 (4 per cent) to 4,684, of which the number of hospital medical consultants increased by 81 (5 per cent) to 1,584.
  • Nursing, midwifery & health visiting staff increased by 746 (3 per cent) to 28,152, of which qualified nursing, midwifery and health visiting staff increased by 572 (3 per cent) to 20,698.
  • Scientific, therapeutic & technical staff increased by 305 (3 per cent) to 9,699.
  • Administration & estates staff increased by 745 (5 per cent) to 15,421.

In 2005:

  • Over three quarters (78 per cent) of the 94,300 people employed by the NHS were female.
