The latest National Statistics on Private Sector Renewal activity 2007-08 produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 25 February 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on Private Sector Renewal Activity in Wales include data for the year 2007- 08.  The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 28 November 2007.

The key points:

  • Overall, local authorities in Wales spent just over £69 million on providing help to private owners and to tenants in their area for home improvement and repair.
  • Almost half of this, some £31.3 million was expenditure on activity under the 2002 Order. The remaining £37.7 million (55 per cent) of expenditure covered Mandatory Disabled Facilities grants (DFGs) and residual activity under the 1996 Act.
  • Expenditure on Mandatory DFGs decreased by around 7 per cent during 2007-08 from £40.5 million to £37.6 million.
  • By 2007-08 residual activity, under the 1996 Act was minimal. The total value of payments on completed grants was just £173,000, less than 1 per cent of the overall expenditure.
  • The number of group repair type schemes completed dropped from 13 in 2006-07 to just 2 in 2007-08 covering 14 dwellings and with an estimated total cost of £364,000.
  • There were 36 Renewal areas in operation during 2007-08 and expenditure on these areas totalled £31.2million.
