The latest National Statistics on new house building produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 11 June 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on the number of new dwellings started and completed include data for Wales for the period January to March 2008, as reported by local authorities. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 12 March 2008. This information is based on the reports of local authority building inspectors and the National House Building Council (NHBC). It does not include information from private approved inspectors.

Starts

  • During the January to March quarter 2008 there were 1,816 new dwellings started.
  • The number of starts has decreased by 1,011 (36 per cent) from the previous quarter and decreased by 273 (13 per cent) from the same quarter of the previous year.
  • The private sector accounted for 1,781 of new dwellings started, some 98 per cent of all activity. The remaining 35 dwellings were started by registered social landlords. There were no local authority starts this quarter.
  • During the quarter the highest number of starts, across all tenures, were seen in Cardiff and Carmarthenshire whilst the Vale of Glamorgan and Blaenau Gwent saw the lowest number of starts.

Completions

  • 1,820 dwellings were completed during the January to March 2008 quarter.
  • The number of completions decreased by 469 (20 per cent) from the previous quarter and by 849 (32 per cent) from the same quarter of the previous year.
  • 1,781 dwellings (98 per cent) were completed by the private sector. Of the remaining completions 34 dwellings were completed by registered social landlords and 5 dwellings were completed by local authorities.
  • The highest number of dwelling completions, across all tenures, were seen in Cardiff and Swansea whilst the lowest were seen in Blaenau Gwent and the Vale of Glamorgan.
