The latest National Statistics on the destinations of students gaining higher education (HE) qualifications from Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the UK in the academic year 2010/11 produced by the Welsh Government were released on 25th October 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website The bulletin includes data on Welsh domiciled qualifiers and those who studied at Welsh HEIs.  The data included here are taken from the Higher Education Statistics Agency’s (HESA) 2010/11 Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) record.

2010/11 Summary

  • Student qualifiers in the six years from 2005/06 exhibit broadly similar destination activities and proportions with around three quarters of Welsh domiciled qualifiers and qualifiers from Welsh HEIs engaged in some kind of employment. In both cases, around half of all qualifiers were in full-time work. However, a likely result of the recession can be seen in a small but notable increase in the percentage of Welsh domiciled qualifiers in part-time work (from 9 per cent in 2005/06 to 13 per cent in 2010/11) with a reciprocal decrease in full-time employment (from 54 per cent to 49 per cent). Over the same period there has been a two percentage point increase in the proportion assumed to be unemployed.
  • Qualifiers from Welsh HEIs were less likely to remain in Wales for employment when compared to the equivalent ‘retention’ figure for other UK countries, but retention rates for Welsh domiciled qualifiers (i.e. those originally living in Wales and subsequently entering employment in Wales) were higher than for all English regions with the exception of London.
  • Between 2005/06 and 2010/11 the proportion of full-time, first degree Welsh domiciled qualifiers entering employment in Wales increased year on year (from 68 per cent to 74 per cent).
