Students in Higher Education Institutions, 2009/10

The latest National Statistics on students enrolled at Welsh Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and Welsh domiciled students enrolled at HEIs throughout the UK in the academic year 2009/10 were released on 17th February 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 10th February 2010. This bulletin is based on statistics produced by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) and follow on from the statistics previously released by HESA on 13th January 2011.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • There were 127,885 HE student enrolments at Welsh HEIs, 1 per cent higher than 2008/09. 31 per cent of enrolments were part-time.
  • There were 102,875 Welsh domiciled HE student enrolments at UK HEIs, similar to the figure in 2008/09. 41 per cent of enrolments were part-time.
  • 37,900 higher education qualifications were obtained at Welsh HEIs.
  • 26,600 higher education qualifications were obtained by Welsh domiciled students at UK HEIs.
  • Since 2001/02 the proportion of Welsh domiciled students studying in Wales has increased from 62 per cent to 70 per cent . Similarly the proportion of UK domiciled students at Welsh HEIs who are from Wales has increased from 55 per cent to 60 per cent.
