Staff and Finance of Welsh Higher Education Institutions, 2009/10

The latest Statistics on staff and finance of Welsh Higher Education institutions (HEIs) in the academic year 2009/10 were released on 24th March 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Staff at Higher Education Institutions

  • In 2009/10 there were 20,140 staff at Welsh HEIs, 45 more than in 2008/09.
  • Cardiff University employed most staff (5,880), almost double the next largest - the University of Glamorgan (3,055). These were followed by Swansea University (2,405) Aberystwyth University (2,295) and Bangor University (1,845).
  • Less than a half – 8,860 staff - were recorded as academic professionals. In 81 per cent of academic posts, teaching was recorded as a primary employment.
  • The average age of full-time academic staff was 44 years.  22 per cent were aged below 35 and 18 per cent were aged 55 or over.
  • 11,285 non-academic staff were employed by Welsh HEIs, of which 3,205 were ‘library assistants, clerks and general administrative assistants’, 1,595 were ‘non-academic professionals’ and a further 1,455 were ‘Cleaners, catering assistants, security officers, porters and maintenance workers’
  • 53 per cent of all staff were female. However in academic posts only 42 per cent were female compared with 62 per cent of non-academic staff. Furthermore 65 per cent of part-time staff were female.
  • 36 per cent of academic staff and 38 per cent of non-academic staff worked part-time.

Finance of Higher Education Institutions

  • Total income of Welsh HEIs was £1,235 million, around £64m more than in 2008/09.
  • 37 per cent of income was from "Funding body grants" (£454m), 31 per cent came from "Tuition fees and education contracts" (£379m), 13 per cent came from “Research grants and contracts” (£156m) while "Other Income" (£241m) accounted for 19 per cent of income. "Other Income" includes the income not accounted for in other categories, for example income in respect of services rendered to outside bodies. This split of income was similar to 2008/09.
  • Total expenditure by Welsh HEIs was £1,200 million, around £50 million more than in 2008/09.
  • 59 per cent of expenditure by Welsh HEIs was on staff costs (£709m).
