The latest statistics on Financial Contingency Funds produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 28 April 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

This Statistical Bulletin presents information on the number of awards from Financial Contingency Funds (FCFs) for students at both higher and further education institutions for the academic year 2009/10. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 29 April 2010.

Applications to, and awards given out at, HEIs increased in 2009/10 although a smaller average award meant that the overall allocation was similar to the previous year. Applications to FEIs fell compared with the previous year although the number of individual awards increased by 6 per cent, leading to increased expenditure.

Key results for 2009/10:

Higher Education:

  • The number of applications for financial assistance from Financial Contingency Funds rose by 5 per cent to 10,120 compared with the previous year. The number of successful applications rose to 8,295 (6 per cent increase) compared with the previous year.
  • 9,000 individual awards were funded in 2009/10, compared with 8,410 in the previous year (an increase of 7 per cent).
  • The total amount allocated to institutions was £5.2m.
  • 27 per cent of successful applications were from students aged under 21, and 35 per cent were from those aged between 21 and 24.

Further Education:

  • The number of applications for financial assistance from Financial Contingency Funds fell by 2 per cent to 20,845 compared with the previous year. The number of successful applications fell to 19,390 (1 per cent decrease) compared with the previous year.
  • 25,405 individual awards were funded in 2009/10, compared with 23,920 in the previous year.
  • The total amount allocated to institutions was £7.0m (an increase of 6 per cent).
  • 57 per cent of awards were to students aged between 16 and 18.
