The latest National Statistics on the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) - specifically those leavers completing Initial Teacher Training (ITT) courses and who were awarded Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in Wales 2009/10 - produced by the Welsh Government were released on 29 September 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website The DLHE presents a snapshot of the activities of qualifiers six months after graduation. This Headline presents data on the destinations of students who have completed an ITT course provided through a higher education institutions (HEI) in Wales in 2009/10 and been awarded Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). It represents a supplementary analysis to the Statistical Bulletin ‘Initial Teacher Training, 2009/10’ (SB21/2011 (R)).

The method for identifying students achieving QTS has been amended this year. A more detailed explanation is included in the Notes section of the ‘Initial Teacher Training, 2009/10’ bulletin, but as a result of this change, comparisons with figures produced in previous years will not be valid. Figures for 2008/09 included in this Headline and in the attached tables have, however, been re-calculated using the revised method, allowing changes over the past year to be monitored.

Of students completing ITT courses who were awarded QTS and for whom their destination was known 6 months after graduation:

  • 89 per cent of PGCE qualifiers were in employment only and a further six per cent were in a combination of employment and further study. Two per cent were assumed to be unemployed.
  • 87 per cent of first degree qualifiers were in employment only.  Four per cent were in a combination of employment and further study, while five per cent were assumed to be unemployed.

For those ITT completers who were awarded QTS and whose teaching activity was known six months after graduation:

  • 81 per cent of PGCE qualifiers were in a teaching post, 12 per cent were seeking a teaching post and seven per cent were not seeking a teaching post (85 per cent, nine per cent and six per cent respectively in 2008/09).
  • 76 per cent of first degree qualifiers were in a teaching post, 16 per cent were seeking a teaching post and eight per cent were not seeking a teaching post (72 per cent, 19 per cent and eight per cent in 2008/09).
  • 70 per cent of PGCE qualifiers and 71 per cent of first degree qualifiers in teaching posts were employed in Wales, compared to 68 per cent and 71 per cent respectively in 2008/09.
  • PGCE qualifiers were more likely to be employed in secondary schools, whilst First Degree qualifiers were more likely to be employed in primary schools.
  • 87 per cent of all qualifiers in teaching were employed in the maintained sector, compared to 89 per cent in 2008/09.

Response rates

Destinations data have been obtained for 1,065 PGCE qualifiers and 440 first degree qualifiers, representing an overall response rate of 83 per cent. Comparisons over time should be treated with some caution due to the variation in non-response. The response rates for PGCE qualifiers decreased from 83 per cent in 2008/09 to 82 per cent whilst for First Degree qualifiers the response rate decreased from 86 per cent to 84 per cent.
