Staff and Finance of Welsh Higher Education Institutions, 2008/09

The latest Statistics on staff and finance of Welsh Higher Education institutions (HEIs) in the academic year 2008/09 were released on 26th March 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 31st March 2009. This headline is based on statistics produced by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA).

The key points from the latest release are:

Staff at Higher Education Institutions

  • In 2008/09 there were 20,095 staff at Welsh HEIs, 780 more than in 2007/08.
  • Cardiff University employed most staff (5,925), more than double the next largest - the University of Glamorgan (2,860), Swansea University (2,445) Aberystwyth University (2,275 – 16 per cent higher than the previous year) and Bangor University (1,860).
  • Less than a half – 8,995 staff - were recorded as academic professionals. In 80 per cent of academic posts, teaching was recorded as a primary employment.
  • The average age of full-time academic staff was 44. Just under a quarter were aged below 35 and 18 per cent were aged 55 or over.
  • 11,100 non-academic staff were employed by Welsh HEIs, of which 2,275 were ‘library assistants, clerks or general administrative assistants’, 1,750 were ‘secretaries, typists, receptionists or telephonists’ and a further 1,620 were non-academic professionals.
  • Just over a half of all staff were female. However in academic posts only 4 in 10 were female compared with just over 6 in 10 of non-academic staff. Furthermore around two thirds of part-time staff were female.
  • Around 35 per cent of academic staff and non-academic staff worked part-time.

Finance of Higher Education Institutions

  • Total income of Welsh HEIs was £1,170 million, £80 million more than in 2007/08.
  • 38 per cent of income was from "Funding Council Grants" (£440m), 29 per cent came from "Tuition Fees & education grants & contracts" (£338m) and "Other Income" (£223m) accounted for 19 per cent of HEI income. "Other Income" includes the income not accounted for in other categories, for example income in respect of services rendered to outside bodies.
  • Total expenditure by Welsh HEIs was £1,149 million, around £89 million more than in 2007/08.
  • 60 per cent of expenditure by Welsh HEIs was on staff costs (£686m).
