Student Support for Higher Education in Wales, Academic Year 2010/11 (Provisional)

The latest National Statistics on Student Support for Higher Education in Wales produced by the Student Loans Company (SLC) were released on 25 November 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 25 November 2009.

Key results for 2010/11, two months into the academic year (provisional):

  • 53,400 students have been awarded £406.4m of student support so far.
  • The total amount of Assembly Learning Grant (ALG) awarded so far is £88.1m, more than half of which (£45.5m) was awarded to students in the new 2010/11 cohort.
  • For those applicants entering higher education in 2010/11, 38 per cent have been awarded full ALG support and 32 per cent have been awarded partial ALG support so far.
  • 47,200 applicants were awarded Maintenance Loans, amounting to £154.5m so far.
  • 47,000 applicants were awarded Tuition fee Loan, amounting to £111.5m so far.

Key results for academic year 2009/10 (final):

  • The final amount of student support awarded in 2009/10 was £396.2m, an increase of 13 per cent on 2008/09.
  • A total of £67.9m was awarded in Assembly Learning Grant (ALG), an increase of 22 per cent on 2008/09.
  • For those applicants entering higher education under the 2006/07 to 2009/10 cohorts, 35 per cent (33 per cent in 2008/09) were awarded a full ALG.
  • In 2009/10, 47,500 students were paid Maintenance Loan which amounted to £164.1m, compared to 44,600 paid in 2008/09 amounting to £151.8m.
  • In 2009/10, Higher Education Institutions were paid Tuition Fee Loans totalling £77.7m on behalf of 43,200 Welsh domiciled students, and EU domiciled students studying in Wales.
  • The final amount awarded in Tuition Fee Grant for academic year 2009/10 was £72.8m.

Latest loan take-up rates, for academic year 2008/09:

  • An estimated 85.2 per cent of eligible students took out a Maintenance Loan.
  • An estimated 72.6 per cent of eligible students took out a Tuition Fee Loan.
  • For those entering higher education under the 2006/07 to 2008/09 cohorts, the take-up rate for the Tuition Fee Loan varied from 71.7 per cent for those studying in Wales to 90.6 per cent for those studying in England (who were not eligible for the Tuition Fee Grant).
