Student Loans for Higher Education in Wales, 2007-08 (Provisional)

The latest National Statistics on Student Loans for Higher Education in Wales produced by the Student Loans Company (SLC) were released on 17 June 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on loan outlay, repayments of loan and borrower activity include data for Welsh domiciled students and those EU students studying in Wales during financial year 2007-08 and comparable figures for 2005-06 and 2006-07. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 12 June 2007.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • At the end of the 2007-08 financial year the outstanding balance of student loans had increased by £193 million since the previous financial year and stood at £1.32 billion.
  • £1.26 billion of this figure relates to income contingent loans for which the Assembly has responsibility. The remainder are mortgage style loans which remain the responsibility of DIUS.
  • £193m was lent to Welsh domiciled students or EU students in Wales last year, £153m of which was for maintenance loans and £40m of which was for tuition fee loans. Maintenance loan outlay had increased by 3.0% compared with the previous year.
  • £34m worth of loans had been repaid to borrowers' accounts. £25m of these repayments related to Income Contingent Loans.
