The latest National Statistics on participation of young people (aged 16 to 24) in education and the labour market produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 29 July 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on participation levels include data for Wales for the period up to the end of 2006. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 26 July 2007.

The key points from the latest release are:

The breakdown of participation in education and the labour market for 16 to 18 year olds at year end 2006 changed slightly compared with previous years. Compared with 2005, there was an increase in the proportion of 16 to 18 year olds in education or training, a similar proportion of 16 to 18 year olds not engaged in education or training nor in employment (NEET) and fewer in employment. The breakdown for 19 to 24 year olds was similar to 2005.

For 16 to 18 year olds:

  • 75 per cent were engaged in some kind of education or training (74 per cent in 2005);
  • 46 per cent were in full or part-time employment (50 per cent in 2005); and
  • 10 per cent were not engaged in education or training nor in employment (similar to 2005).

For 19 to 24 year olds:

  • 39 per cent were engaged in some kind of education or training (similar to 2005);
  • 65 per cent were in full or part-time employment (66 per cent in 2005); and
  • 18 per cent were not engaged in education or training nor in employment (17 per cent in 2005).

The information is drawn from a number of sources, details of which are given in the notes at the end of the release.

This release uses revised population estimates from end 2001 to end 2006. End of year population estimates are subject to regular revision as more accurate information becomes available. The Labour Force Survey data used in this release have been re-weighted to the latest population estimates and some changes have been made to the weighting methodology. Analysis indicates the impact of these changes is small. Estimates of participation in education and the labour market have been revised back to year end 2004, revised estimates for years before 2004 will be published in the next few months.

Data tables on participation in education from 1996 to 2006 are available by single year of age up to the age of 30 through the Assembly's interactive service StatsWales, along with a newly produced table showing young people NEET from 2004 to 2006.
