The latest National Statistics on teachers produced by the Welsh Government were released on 14 June 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website Statistics on teachers in service, vacancies and sickness absence include data for Wales for the period as at January 2012. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 16 June 2011.

The key points from the latest release are:

Teachers in service with local authorities LAs:

  • There were 26,977 full-time equivalent (FTE) teachers employed by local authorities, a decrease of 355 since January 2011.

Teacher vacancies:

  • The total number of teacher vacancies in nursery, primary and secondary schools was 93. In nursery schools there were 2 vacancies, 56 in primary schools and 35 in secondary schools.
    The total vacancy rate was 0.4 per cent, same as in January 2011.

Teacher sickness absence:

  • 59 per cent of teachers in maintained schools took a period of sickness absence during 2011, down from 64 per cent during 2010.
  • The total number of sick-days taken decreased by over 2 per cent, to 213,317 days.
