Exclusions from schools, 2011/12

The latest statistics produced by the Welsh Government were released on 26 February 2013 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics include data for Wales for the past ten academic years, from 2002/03 to 2011/12, and for England and Scotland for the academic year 2010/11. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 28 February 2012.

The key points(r) from the latest release are:

  • in 2011/12 there were 102 permanent exclusions and 17,508 fixed-term exclusions
  • the rate of permanent exclusions decreased from 0.4 exclusions per 1,000 pupils in 2010/11 to 0.3 in 2011/12
  • the rate of fixed-term exclusions fell from 46.1 exclusions per 1,000 pupils in 2010/11 to 44.3 in 2011/12
  • assault or violence towards staff and defiance of rules were the two largest causes for permanent exclusions
