The latest National Statistics on 2011 Mid-Year Population Estimates produced by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) were released on 25th September 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on 2011 mid-year population estimates include data for Wales, England, for the period up to the end of June 2011. The latest release takes into account the results of the 2011 Census, the first release from which was published on 16th July 2012.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • As at 30th June 2011 there were estimated to be 3,063,800 people resident in Wales.
  • In 2011 there were estimated to be more people aged 65 and over resident in Wales than children (persons aged 0 to 15).
  • In 2011 the percentage of total population aged 65+ in Wales was 18.5 (566,400), while the percentage of total population aged under 16 was 18.1 (555,800).
  • Most local authorities in Wales saw an increase in population between Census day and the mid-year point (30th June 2011).
