Welsh Government (WG)

Statisticians in the Welsh Government work primarily in the Statistical Directorate (SD), a centralised statistical division organised into specific subject area teams. In addition to statistical staff, it includes WG’s Cartographic branch.

SD is part of the wider Knowledge Services Department alongside Economic Advice, Social Research, Information and Knowledge Management Divisions within the Department of the First Minister and Cabinet.

Some statistics are also produced within other parts of the WG, for example Local Government Finance and parts of Education, but with professional accountability to the Chief Statistician.

They produce statistical information across a wide range of topics covering all aspects of Welsh life including population, health, housing, education, training, agriculture, industry, the economy, local government finance, transport, the environment and the Welsh language.

In doing this they commission surveys and carry out their own data collection and make use of statistics compiled by other government departments and other bodies.
