UK Statistics Authority website

Statistics on regional disposable income include data for the UK countries and English regions and for sub-regions across the UK for the period up to calendar year 2011. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 25 April 2012.

The key points for Wales from the latest release are:

  • headline gross disposable household income (GDHI) per head in Wales in 2011 was £14,129 or 88.1 per cent of the UK average, up 0.1 percentage points relative to the UK average on 2010. This proportion increased year-on-year between 1999 and 2005, it then saw a decrease to 2009, after which it has increased
  • Wales saw the fourth largest percentage increase in GDHI per head out of the UK countries and English regions between 1999 and 2011, up 56.6 per cent compared to a 52.1 per cent increase across the UK
  • Wales saw the joint third largest percentage increase in GDHI per head alongside Northern Ireland and the West Midlands out of the UK countries and English regions between 2010 and 2011, all up 2.8 per cent compared to 2.7 per cent for the UK as a whole
  • the estimates for 2011 show that GDHI per head in East Wales and West Wales and the Valleys were 92.0 per cent and 85.8 per cent of the UK average respectively
  • West Wales and the Valleys has seen an increase of 56.1 per cent in GDHI per head since 1999, while East Wales has seen a 57.2 per cent increase, both above the increase for the UK (up 52.1 per cent)
  • GDHI per head in Wales in 2011 was the 4th lowest amongst the UK countries and English regions, ahead of the North East, Northern Ireland and Yorkshire & the Humber. This ranking changed between 2009 and 2010 when Wales overtook Northern Ireland, moving from being the joint 3rd lowest to the 4th lowest
  • following the 2012 ONS review of regional accounts smoothing and commuter adjustments, the smoothing adjustment has now ceased. In-line with the recommendations of a European Commission task force, the allocation of activities to extra-regio (for example residence based activities of armed forces abroad) has also been stopped with the extra-regio component allocated across the regions

The dataset on StatsWales will be updated in due to course to include these new data, as well as estimates for the 12 Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics 3 (NUTS3) areas of Wales.
